昨年カリフォルニアで猛威を奮った百日咳に対策するため、州は新たに7年生以上の児童に百日咳の追加予防接種を受けることを義務付けた。しかし、この告知が保護者に十分に認知されておらず、現段階で学校に予防接種の証明書を提出しているのは10人の生徒に1人程度しかいないという。予防接種は新しく7年生以上になる全児童が対象で、証明書を提出していないと新学期に登校を拒否される事になる。
百日咳は就学時の必須予防接種に含まれているので、摂取ずみと勘違されているケースが多いが、今回求められているのはTdapといわれるブースターショットで、最初の予防接種から10年で効果が薄れ始めるために追加で受ける必要があるもので、ほぼ全ての児童が対象となる。
保護者はファミリードクターなどに相談して、早めに予防接種をうけ、証明書を学校に提出するよう呼びかけられている。

Starting July 2011, a new law (AB 354) changing California immunization requirements for all students entering
7th-12th grades goes into effect. The law requires:
This coming school year (2011-2012), all students entering into 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grades will
need proof of an adolescent whooping cough booster shot (called “Tdap”) before starting school.
For the next school year (2012-13) and future school years, all students entering into 7th grade only will need proof of a Tdap shot to start school.
